How rough is the Aegean Sea?

The Aegean Sea covers the eastern area in Greece and includes the most popular islands of the country. It starts from the very north and the town of Alexandroupoli and ends at the northern coastline of Crete.

The Cyclades islands and especially Naxos, where our base of operation is, are located at a very strategic position. They provide fast and easy access to many islands, making island hopping increasingly popular.

When it comes to yachting and sailing tours, one can never be too careful. At sea, safety rules must always be followed to the letter. Knowing you are safe and weather conditions play the most important role for a relaxing holiday on either a sailing boat or a motor boat.

However, in contrast with what many people believe, the Aegean Sea is not considered as particularly rough, especially when compared with other destinations worldwide. This does not mean that it is benign.

Thankfully, there is a large number of islands scattered in the area, providing the ideal conditions for a safe haven, should the need arise. Additionally, distances between the islands are quite short, in most cases. It is very easy and quick to reach an island port, especially with a motor boat, when the weather gets unpredictably windy.

Starting off from Naxos will give you an idea of what to expect. Please consult your captain and let him know of your boating experience just in case the weather deteriorates bringing some swells with it. Safety first, remember! If you are uncertain, we would advise you to hire Filitsa I or Filitsa II yachts that come with a captain.

Always keep in mind that our mini yachts will not get permission from the port authorities to depart from the port of Naxos if weather conditions become challenging. Moreover, our extensive knowledge of the area and vast experience at sea is what you must rely on, when you are about to make such a decision.
